Tomorrow night is the Refinery night at the Art Gallery of Alberta, a soiree of art and fun and sips that tends to go fairly late. It coincides with their fresh exhibitions, and within that, they also commission a few local creators-of-things-visual to make something special for all the people attending. I was one of the approached this time around, and proposed the idea of making a small little book / zine that relates to their current (and awesome) Warner Bros. exhibition. It’s a bit crude and crass and lo-fi, andt if you want one, you have to come to Refinery night. Each ticket comes with a signed and stamped copy of the zine. Will they become coasters or collectibles for all those late night partiers, only time will tell…

The National Portrait Gallery show opening, June 11th, 7pm at Latitude 53, a highly anticipated art show here in Edmonton. In it you will find many great art pieces in many great mediums from the minds of many great artists. My submitted piece, seen above, sits in at a crude and hefty 22″ x 30″ on juicy 300lb watercolour paper (mmm). I’d say it definitely looks best in “real life” – as most non-digital work do – as there are subtle textures that cannot be seen here. It’s a quasi-portrait of a retired Canadian senator with a sprinkling of a few Canadian killers…

Other notable artists in the show include one of my good pals, and a definite personal fave, Brandon J. Blommaert, the great Canadian Douglas Coupland, my old neighbour in Calgary Terrance Houle, and local cool dude Nickelas Johnson.

Tomorrow I’m off to Toronto for the National Magazine Awards, as Genevieve, as well as my good pal Byron, have both been nominated as best new visual creators. Sounds like a good excuse to get down!

What’s keeping me busy: just finished a batch of images for the upcoming issue of Maisonneuve (hands down one of my fave magazines in Canada), working on a piece for the National Portrait Gallery show here in Edmonton, as well as a commission for the Art Gallery of Alberta. More info coming soon.

Delkographik, based out of Rennes, France, is putting on a show entitled Fifteen, showcasing 15 cartoonists from around the globe. Each of us has been asked to produce one serigraph ready “comic strip” image to be printed by the talented Anaick Moriceau for the show. How nice to not have to worry about doing all the print work and having to mail it all the way across the Atlantic. Oh the internet! The list of other included artists / cartoonists is international, awesome, and includes one of my personal favourites, VICE‘s own Johnny Ryan. Oh, and it’s in French, yay!

My submitted image is above, dealing with the plight of having a face that endlessly transforms. The torment!

Oh yeah! COVERED! blog creator Robert Goodin curated a show down in L.A. at The Secret Headquarters gallery with some of his fave COVERED! contributors, and Genevieve and I were lucky enough to be asked to take part. Minus a certain mail mishap (e.g. broken frameage, ewch!), the show seems to have turned out great! The opening was on March 6th. I’m not too sure how it will all be up for, but if you find yourself in the Los Angeles area and are in need of some original art, check it out!

I won’t share my submitted painting with you yet, as the COVERED! blog gets priority. But as soon as it’s up, I’ll post it here.
