Idle Stance 01

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Just trying to animate some “idle stances” for some pre-made characters in Flash. This guy was intended for Eye Weekly’s Renew Guide, sans illustration.

Looking Good

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

As previously mentioned in a past post, this image comes from the same series for Eye Weekly’s Renew Guide, back in January. This feller was found on the cover, and I really like how it turned out. Maybe it’s the nearly missing background, the undies on the floor, or the fact that the colouring is so simple and straight forward. Surprised that I haven’t posted this yet…

Bye

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Goodbyes can be annoying when they last too long.
Another last minute-ish illo for Eye Weekly, out in Toronto. Taylor Shute was once again a stand up guy for helping me with this one. The short synopsis that we were given for the column was rather abstract, and it felt like we were almost kicking a dead horse trying to find an image that would suit. it.  Funny how the final result ends up being so straightforward and simple sometimes…

A sampling from this month’s issue of Transworld Snowboarding Mag about the job market in the snowzone.  Yum.

falklands giveaway

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Yup. It’s been a while. So to make up for it I want to begift you. More specifically, one of you. Or better even, the first of you. Playing off of the idea of the monthly contest day found on Raymond Biesingers The Daily Sentry (hands down one of the best illustrator blogs out there), I will mail out a copy of both falklands EPs, which I’ve created minor packaging for, to the first person to comment on this post. Easy as that! So you if you enjoy good local Edmonton rock and leaving comments on blogs, you can expect to see their two CD EPs, one of them fresh off the boat, in the mail!

Currently on the table keeping me busy: Some work for the Globe and Mail, due out tomorrow (you can see Genevieve’s today!). Once again, a few illustrations in the making for Euroman out in Denmark, and of course, working on chapter 2 of We Hate This Place Here; It’s Our Home.

Friendly Giant

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Though this was not made with Valentines Day in mind, it can still hold its own on this day of heartache. Over at Latitude 53–Edmonton’s premiere artist run centre du jour–you can buy a membership as a gift for a loved one and they will receive this lovely image in limited edition print form. Better still, you, the buyer, will receive the other image / half of the series in limited edition print form as well. See below.

RedMan

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

This month’s issue of Transworld Snowboarding has a big red man in it (see portfolio for full image) sweeping away the old generation of snowboarding culture and the folks who milk their glorious past for all it’s worth. Funny though, as in a few years that old lame thing known as the past will probably be the new thing that’s in style. Them’s the breaks.

The other concept for the illustration was an old washed up 90’s snowboarder — whatever that means — sucking on the ever giving teat of a cow (see, extremely crude sketch below). That would have been something else.

Going Green

And on the completely opposite side of the style spectrum,
when compared to the last post, we see the above for Baltimore Magazine out of, yup, you guessed it, Baltimore, MD. A fun and light hearted image about BNEC, the Baltimore Neighbourhood Energy Challenge–which, might I add, is something all cities should take part in! Like most jobs there were a few ideas floating around about the direction of the illustration, and some of them obviously didn’t make the cut. See the proposed images below–my personal favourite being the one with the giant, as it is generally a weirdy. Oh, and thanks to the friendly Kathryn Mychailyszyn from the mag for working with me on this one!
