falklands #3

Friday, March 25th, 2011

These guys kick le butt here in Edmonton. They are falklands.
When they aren’t too busy touring or recording, or judging by their tour photos, partying, they find time to ask me politely to whip up some silly arts for their many EPs. Above, my third stab at it. I’d say it’s my favourite contribution to the band thus far. A bit cute. Full of bromosexuals. A cat. The colour orange.  Can’t wait to hold a copy of it in my fingers — which should be very soon — and when I do, I’ll give one away one of my copies away to one of you… for free! Keep your eyes peeled for some contest action!

Wired!

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

The latest issue of Wired magazine was waiting for me in the mail today, and in it two of my illustrations grace its pages. One illustration (above) accompanies a short word-match puzzle about wrestling moves, and the other, for their monthly Angry Nerd column, debates the outcome of a Batman vs. Spiderman fight. Angry Nerd, you say? Yes, though be sure not to confuse it those illustrations I made in the past for Transworld Snow‘s Angry Interns column.

The iPad edition of Wired magazine is extra special, too, because not only do you get to see these illustrations, you get to see them in ANIMATED form! Totally awesome.

Thanks to Alice at Wired (an ex-Edmontonian!) for getting in touch with me for these. She is swell!

Classics from the Vaults 1

Monday, March 7th, 2011

I decided to get an external hard-drive a few days ago, realizing that if ever my computer failed me, I’d be le big time screwed, loosing a few years worth of imagery… and music. In the process of backing up all my files I’ve found quite a few funnies that have gone overlooked in time.  Take for example the fall 2008, when I was approached to make a spot for a FFWD article about unsexy sexy films, printed in their Nov. 27, 2008 issue, methinks. The result: Marilyn Monroe meets male slobtard. I think I’ll have to put this classic in the portfolio, because yeah, I’d love to make more of this.

Sometimes you have an idea that won’t make the cut
in the eye’s of an Art Director. That’s OK. Many illustrations are just new interpretations of ideas that aren’t really that new, so I’m sure one day I’ll be able to let this concept shine for some other job, be it about highway driving, taking your time, or simply, having a giant pet turtle. One day, rejected rough, one day.

The Cold Front

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Seen above: a sample from a bunch of illustrations made for last Friday’s issue of Calgary’s entertainment weekly, Swerve.
A tale about heading out to Cold Calgary from Warm Vancouver, written by John Gray, writer of hit Canadian musical Billy Bishop Goes to War. Do you recognize the same motif as seen in my Nevermore illustration? Recycling is fun.

Sometimes a pet cat makes it into my illustrations.
This is Fritz. He’s in the Globe & Mail today, in a tale of cat allergies. Of course, this is best seen in print.

It’s not a tumor!

Monday, December 13th, 2010

A clean and crisp spot illustration for Research News,
a clean and crisp magazine about medicinal projects, filled with great illustrations and funded by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. Obviously, right? The article accompanying this image is about tumor suppression.
