ELECTRIC Poster

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Electricity for Everybody! is releasing a CD in the coming month, and to help get the party started, good pal Sean Borchert from Birch Heart (promotions) has asked me to handle poster duties for the show. Any day, Sean! Other killer local acts to be seen include Field + Stream and Sans AIDS.

Music posters are one favourite jobs to take on. They can use imagery that has no direct meaning to the show itself, whose sole purpose as a poster is to simply catch the viewers attention and bring them to the venue. So what does that mean? Draw whatever you want! Make something weird, messed up, and irrelevant to look at, then throw some venue information into the layout, and voila, done. That’ll get them thinking! Sure. they usually pay like crap, but on the other hand, music posters let you have complete artistic control – at least under my “music poster” terms.

Giant Pets…

…would be sweet to have
. This was made for Göoo #9 out of Argentina. Just a friendly zine / mag. The issue was based around the idea of Utopia, and that made me think of giant pets…

Improv Boys

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

I was recently asked to whip up a poster for the Improv Boys’
upcoming Canadian tour. I was aiming for the old crest / coat of arms motif that I feel very fond of, with a cartooned twist. I think it conveys the necessary amount of Canadiana to me, and can’t wait to see this one in print! Now off to work on some overdue work for a zine out of Argentina and an art show in Rennes, France.

Been so lazy.
On another note, a wee poster made before the holiday for Stacy Lloyd Brown’s annual holiday show. It was good and you missed out. More to come soon.

Transport Tycoons

broken system
Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe
,
one of my fiercer addictions, combined with living in a city with one of the lesser public transport systems I know of, Edmonton, have both inspired a recent(ish) series of large drawings. They reflect the idea of impossible railway / transport systems combined with the “usual” drippy imagery that comes with my territory. They’re pretty large at 22″ x 30″, and are solely created with black ink and white gouache, my favourites!

I’m aiming at making 12 images in this series, and right now I’m at four. Could be a while still, but the idea of having them at some sort of show might not be half-bad…

Stacy Lloyd Brown + Machinery

Long time best friend Stacy Lloyd Brown, from Musical Chair Music, frequently asks me to make posters, packaging, and other paraphernalia for his things musicallly inclined. This here is a poster for his upcoming tour with fellow group, Machinery. We all originate from Grande Prairie, AB.

This poster is also a tribute to the great Tom Eckersley, famous poster designer for The Underground in London,UK. Can you find out which poster of his I am sniping from?

Where do we come From?

are we dead yet

Where are you from? is a poster show being put on by good pal, and designustrator, Gabe Wong, along with around 15-20 other artists revolving around the idea of, well, where we all come from.  It opens September 4th at The ARTery, here in Edmonton. Each artist has been asked to make an image in poster-form that relates to the theme of the show, where  do we come from?

SO, I drew from a memory where I was driving my father’s truck at the tender age of 5 or so, sans seatbealt, with my dad smoking 10 sorts of cigarettes at once.  Sure, I was only sitting at the wheel for a mere few seconds, but the memory really stuck. It also struck a chord about a childhood where the duty of discovery, exploration, and most importantly, danger, are placed upon the shoulders of the child his or herself (maybe with the slightest amount of ‘adult supervision’). The poster is titled “Are we dead yet?”, alluding to the classic childhood roadtrip saying “Are we there yet?”, but with a good disregard for safety and well-being: two ingredients for a good time, something that seems to be slowly disappearing in today’s overexposed Facebooked, GPS’d, cell-phone saturated culture…

The poster is a 2 colour screen-print with only 12 copies printed in total, measuring 50cm x 70cm. If they don’t sell out at the show (most likely)  I’ll throw them online for your purchasing pleasure!
