We’re Just Dust And Stuff

I made this poster for Gabe Wong‘s really solid Where Are We Going? poster show at Latitude 53, here in Edmonton. With a total of 21 artists involved, there is an incredible range of work at this show. Much of it digital print, which I think is nice and validating. Though there are a few serigraphed posters in the show, and they made me wish I had a bit more time this month to do the same, as it has been an incredibly busy May.

1) Transport Tycoons opened last weekend at the Artery.
2) Where Are We Going?, also opened last weekend, at Latitude 53.
3) A new rock project I’m involved with, Camembert, played their first actual venue show last weekend.
4) The Royal Bison Art + Craft Fair is this coming weekend (new IBS!)
5) I have a full time job now, at the Art Gallery of Alberta

Hell yeah! I opened up my mail today — just like last post — to be greeted by more treasure. This time the return address was that of super talented illustrator, and mega friendly good guy, Chris Kuzma. A while back he asked me if I’d like to whip up some images for his upcoming book, COMPLEX. Good idea! So I tossed him a small handful of images and almost forgot about it as time passed. But holding them today I see I took part in something special. The print quality is top notch and his comic is great. Support good Canadian cartoons.

Good pal and wizard of words, Matt Prins, enjoys making instant books when he’s not busy making instant books. Recently he approached me, along with Genevieve and a slew of other fine people, to take on a letter for his Alphabooks are the Future project. In summary, each person is assigned a letter of the alphabet and are to submit their own instantbook with a title starting with said letter . The results are very exciting to read, are being posted one letter per day. Today is “I”. I was H. I was yesterday. Genevieve was G, and was yesterday’s yesterday. If you like to write, you should submit stuff to Matt. If you like to read, you should peruse his blog — it’s filled with serious gemwork.

Q Without U

One of the projects that kept me busy for a large portion of November was Q Without U. If you own a copy of the now ultra-rare International Beauty Saloon 3, you may recognize this tale of love and letters written by Omar Mouallem, a.k.a. AOK in the world of hip-hop.

Crudely drawn when it first appeared in IBS3, Omar and I thought we’d re-examine the tale with some added colour, some freshly drawn imagery, and some killer hip-hop to see how it stands on its own as a children’s book / rap album. Yes, included within the contents of Q Without U is a download code that enables you to download AOK’s newest album. Talk about keeping it real in the digital age. It was released this past weekend at the Royal Bison Art + Craft Fair with great success, in part to Omar’s handy ways with press releases. What a guy.

So go ahead, support local independant music, and art, and buy your copy of Q Without U today for only $10.

Things on the go! The Royal Bison Art + Craft Fair is approaching. This time around it is completely organized by myself and two others swell pals, Vikki and Jeanie. Perhaps I’ll see you there, on November 27th and 28th? You can expect to see chapter 3 of We Hate This Place Here premiere at the Bison, as well as International Beauty Saloon: 5, AND a revised and updated version of Q without U that is not only a children’s book, but also an upcoming album by A.O.K. Above, a selection of submitted drawings for Chris Kuzma‘s upcoming Complex, which you will see more of, I assure you!

REFINERY

Tomorrow night is the Refinery night at the Art Gallery of Alberta, a soiree of art and fun and sips that tends to go fairly late. It coincides with their fresh exhibitions, and within that, they also commission a few local creators-of-things-visual to make something special for all the people attending. I was one of the approached this time around, and proposed the idea of making a small little book / zine that relates to their current (and awesome) Warner Bros. exhibition. It’s a bit crude and crass and lo-fi, andt if you want one, you have to come to Refinery night. Each ticket comes with a signed and stamped copy of the zine. Will they become coasters or collectibles for all those late night partiers, only time will tell…
